I find that I have always been most attracted to works and artists who celebrate the spirit of whatever they portray. These days, some contemporary craft is beautiful, but almost machinelike in its perfection--a celebration of technique rather than spirit. I treasure the Catfish, by Charlie Moore, because it so aptly conveys the spirit of this humble Southern river dweller, and it is still singing, even after Charlie is gone. I only hope that my piece, Scattered Showers, can convey, even many years from now, a little of what is was like to be human in these times.
