Maker/Collector Statement

After I moved to Greensboro, NC, near the ceramic hubs of both Catawba Valley and Seagrove, I soon found myself immersed in the rich pottery traditions of North Carolina.

When taught at Catawba Valley Community College, I had the opportunity to work closely with Catawba Valley potter, Kim Ellington, to learn about the Catawba Valley utilitarian pottery tradition, alkaline glaze, native clays and the groundhog kiln. (Lidded Jar)

My Deep Alkaline-Glaze Bowl was wheel-thrown from the natural Catawba Valley clay that Kim gave me to experiment. Kim glazed and fired this piece in his modified groundhog kiln.
